"This book tackled a very real problem that many of our returning war veterans have to live with. If you have never been there, then you cannot possibly understand what it feels like. Author, Jason Kasper, has my respect for giving us an up-close and personal look at one veteran and the inner demons he faces every day.

Mr. Kasper has a unique way of telling a story that kept me riveted until the very last page. Once I started reading this book, I was hooked. I wanted to know everything there was to know about David Rivers: He is a patriot, a US Army Ranger, a veteran of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a West Point graduate. He is also a broken, suicidal, alcoholic, BASE-jumping addict...

The book moves along at a decent pace — the storyline is believable and well thought-out. The world that David Rivers inhabits is a dark and depressing one, and it is described in vivid detail ("There is no return from where I’ve been going ever since the war, combat that I have been banished from..."). I did enjoy the high-octane, adrenaline-fueled, loop-de-loop, free-falling action sequences in the book!

From a psychological perspective, I can understand the character (at least, I think I "get it") and I want to follow his journey to see where it takes him...

I will definitely read AVNER and any further books in this series. I believe that Jason Kasper has a lot more to say — and I, for one, am looking forward to hearing (reading?) it all."

Greatest Enemy David Rivers Jason Kasper Books Reviews

  • The main character, David Rivers, is a guy who seems like he tried to do the right thing in life but was dealt a crappy hand. He did time in the service, seeing combat, and then got appointed to West Point. Unfortunately, his military career took a dive. So did his personal life. In an effort to escape his past defeats he engages in high risk activities, including skydiving, BASE jumping (leaping off buildings, towers, bridges, whatever, with a parachute), and consuming massive quantities of alcohol. When he is not jacked up from these activities, he wallows in misery and contemplates suicide. He also likes to write about his experiences. He has a friend who participates in his adrenaline rushes, and when that friend is killed in an accident, he slides even closer to the edge.

Among his personal baggage are an ex-fiancé and an ex-girlfriend. It turns out that the ex-girlfriend has an ex-boyfriend who is not pleased about David stealing her away. When David reaches the absolute bottom of the barrel, he makes a plan to kill himself just after he blows away the boyfriend. He is successful with the first part, but it turns out he is observed killing the guy, and is captured before he can eat his gun.

As it happens, the people who captured him are members of a small group of highly skilled ex-military guys who do odd, very violent jobs for a mysterious person named the “Handler”. They are impressed with his skills, particularly his BASE jumping ability, and they forcibly recruit him to help with one of their assignments. The mission is successful, and he tentatively becomes one of them, and finds that they are all living on the edge, facing death on a regular basis in order to escape their past demons.

The story follows the group as they prepare for and accomplish a variety of hit jobs. The final mission of the book is the hardest they have ever taken on, and it does not end well. However, it changes David’s life forever, and opens the door for the next book.

The book is well written, moves at just the right pace, is highly accurate in terms of weapons details and combat procedures, doesn’t get bogged down in useless ramblings, and contains twists that you absolutely do not see coming. The writing is rich and full of detail, and is articulate and grammatically correct. It is a pleasure to read. I read the thing in a couple of long nights, and immediately ordered the next two books in the series. This is a very literate shoot-em-up that you will enjoy reading.

  • I learned about Jason Kasper’s novel, Greatest Enemy, from my favorite author, CG Cooper’s page and thought I would give it a try. I read Greatest Enemy and turned around and immediately ordered the second in the series, Offer of Revenge. I must admit, this series is a bit different from what I usually like to read. Let me explain. The main character, David Rivers has a lot of good attributes. He is great at battles and war. However, he has a few points that are less than desirable. First, he is an adrenaline junkie. He is also suicidal. And last, his moral compass is skewed. So, what does this book have to offer? Action! Action! And more action! So, if you want a patriotic hero, as the series is so far, this probably isn’t for you. But, if you want to read mindless action…this is it. By the way, both novels were well written. Jason Kasper is a talented writer and I hope he does well. Give him a chance.
  • David Rivers is a person that you never want to offend. His ability to get into the hardest of locales unseen, unheard and very stealthy confuses the person(s) he is attempting to eliminate. At first it seemed improbable that he could enter, let alone succeed in whatever mission he sets out to destroy. However, his intricate planning is his recipe for success - no matter the obstacle. The Greatest Enemy, has so many twists and turns that kept me plotting his moves from previous encounters in the storyline only to be out guessed each and every time. Yes, he sustains injuries and setbacks but he always learns a better way to adapt, improvise and overcome his objective. However, each and every time when you think he'll do one thing, Rivers turns around does the unexpected - and succeeds.
A thrilling ride from beginning to the last page. Jason Kasper is a strategist beyond compare.
  • I had never heard of this author but picked up the novel because it sounded interesting. This debut novel is simply fantastic and rivals established authors. It is written by someone who has lived the special forces life.. not only that, the author has brought that life to the written page in startling detail. I felt like I was a fly on the wall throughout..

The characters all came to life - no matter how minor their part. Realistic is an understatement.
    Bravo Zulu Jason
I am waiting for the sequel. I wish it was already published.
