""

Tags : ,

El Papa Verde Trilogía Bananera Volume 2 Spanish Edition Miguel Ãngel Asturias Books Reviews :

~Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-12411323974437148182019-04-18T12:46:00.000-07:002019-04-18T12:46:06.074-07:00Download Deep Learning Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series Ian Goodfellow Yoshua Bengio Aaron Courville 9780262035613 Books

Download Deep Learning Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series Ian Goodfellow Yoshua Bengio Aaron Courville 9780262035613 Books

https://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0262035618&Format=_SL300_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&ServiceVersion=20070822

Download As PDF : Deep Learning Adaptive Computation and Machine Learning series Ian Goodfellow Yoshua Bengio Aaron Courville 9780262035613 Books

An introduction to a broad range of topics in deep learning, covering mathematical and conceptual background, deep learning techniques used in industry, and research perspectives.

“Written by three experts in the field, Deep Learning is the only comprehensive book on the subject.â€
―Elon Musk, cochair of OpenAI; cofounder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX

Deep learning is a form of machine learning that enables computers to learn from experience and understand the world in terms of a hierarchy of concepts. Because the computer gathers knowledge from experience, there is no need for a human computer operator to formally specify all the knowledge that the computer needs. The hierarchy of concepts allows the computer to learn complicated concepts by building them out of simpler ones; a graph of these hierarchies would be many layers deep. This book introduces a broad range of topics in deep learning.

The text offers mathematical and conceptual background, covering relevant concepts in linear algebra, probability theory and information theory, numerical computation, and machine learning. It describes deep learning techniques used by practitioners in industry, including deep feedforward networks, regularization, optimization algorithms, convolutional networks, sequence modeling, and practical methodology; and it surveys such applications as natural language processing, speech recognition, computer vision, online recommendation systems, bioinformatics, and videogames. Finally, the book offers research perspectives, covering such theoretical topics as linear factor models, autoencoders, representation learning, structured probabilistic models, Monte Carlo methods, the partition function, approximate inference, and deep generative models.

Deep Learning can be used by undergraduate or graduate students planning careers in either industry or research, and by software engineers who want to begin using deep learning in their products or platforms. I eagerly bought it based on all the positive reviews it had received.
Bad mistake. Only a few of the reviews clearly state the obvious problems of this book. Oddly enough, these informative
reviews tend to attract aggressively negative comments of an almost personal nature.
The disconnect between the majority of cloyingly effusive reviews of this book and the reality of how it is written
is quite flabbergasting. I do not wish to speculate on the reason for this but it does sometimes does occur with
a first book in an important area or when dealing with pioneer authors with a cult following.

First of all, it is not clear who is the audience--the writing does not provide details at the level one
expects from a textbook. It also does not provide a good overview ("big picture thinking"). Advanced readers
would also not gain much because it is too superficial, when it comes to the advanced topics (final 35% of book).
More than half of this book reads like a bibliographic notes section of a book, and the authors seem
to be have no understanding of the didactic intention of a textbook (beyond a collation or importance sampling
of various topics). In other words, these portions read
like a prose description of a bibliography, with equations thrown in for annotation. The level of
detail is more similar to an expanded ACM Computing Surveys article rather than a textbook in
several chapters. At the other extreme of audience expectation, we have a review of linear algebra in the beginning,
which is a waste of useful space that could have been spent on actual explanations in other
chapters. If you don't know linear algebra already, you cannot really hope to follow
anything (especially in the way the book is written). In any case, the linear
algebra introduced in that chapter is too poorly written to even brush up on known material-- so who is that for?
As a practical matter, Part I of the book is mostly redundant/off-topic for a neural network book
(containing linear algebra, probability, and so on)
and Part III is written in a superficial way--so only a third of the book is remotely useful.

Other than a chapter on optimization algorithms (good description of algorithms like
Adam), I do not see even a single chapter that has done a half-decent job of presenting
algorithms with the proper conceptual framework. The presentation style is unnecessarily terse,
and dry, and is stylistically more similar to a research paper rather than a book.
It is understood that any machine learning book would have some mathematical sophistication, but the
main problem is caused by a lack of concern on part of the authors in promoting readability and an inability to
put themselves in reader shoes (surprisingly enough, some defensive responses to negative reviews tend to place
blame on math-phobic readers). At the end of the day, it is the author's responsibility to make
notational and organizational choices that are likely to maximize understanding.
Good mathematicians have excellent manners while choosing notation (you don't use nested
subscripts/superscripts/functions if you possess the clarity to do it more simply).
And no, math equations are not the same as algorithms-- only a small part of it. Where is the rest?
Where is the algorithm described? Where is the conceptual framework?
Where is the intuition? Where are the pseudocodes? Where are the illustrations? Where are the examples?
No, I am not asking for recipes or Python code. Just some decent writing, details, and explanations.
The sections on applications, LSTM and convolutional neural networks are hand-wavy at places and
read like "you can do this to achieve that." It is impossible to fully reconstruct the methods from the
description provided.

A large part of the book (including restricted Boltzmann machines)
is so tightly integrated with Probabilistic Graphical models (PGM), so that it loses its neural network focus.
This portion is also in the latter part of the book that is written in a rather superficial way and
therefore it implicitly creates another prerequisite of being very used to PGM (sort-of knowing it wouldn't be enough). .
Keep in mind that the PGM view of neural networks is not the dominant view today, from either a practitioner
or a research point of view. So why the focus on PGM, if they don't have the space to elaborate?
On the one hand, the authors make a futile attempt at promoting accessibility by discussing redundant
pre-requisites like basic linear algebra/probability basics. On the other hand, the PGM-heavy approach implicitly
increases the pre-requisites to include an even more advanced machine learning topic than neural networks
(with a 1200+ page book of its own). What the authors are doing is the equivalent of trying to teach someone
how to multiply two numbers as a special case of tensor multiplication. Even for RNNs with deterministic hidden states
they feel the need to couch it as a graphical model. It is useful to connect areas, but mixing them
is a bad idea. Look at Hinton's course. It does explain the connection between Boltzmann machines and PGM
very nicely, but one can easily follow RBM without having to bear the constant burden of a PGM-centric view.

One fact that I think played a role in these types of strategic errors of judgement is the fact that the
lead author is a fresh PhD graduate There is no substitute for experience when it comes to maturity
in writing ability (irrespective of how good a researcher someone is). Mature writers have the ability to put
themselves in reader shoes and have a good sense of what is conceptually important. The
authors clearly miss the forest from the trees, with chapter titles like "Confronting
the partition function." The book is an example of the fact that a first book in an important area with the name of
a pioneer author in it is not necessarily a qualification for being considered a good book.
I am not hesitant to call it out. The emperor has no clothes.

The book was frankly a disappointment. It was unclear who the intended audience was. If it were the people who wanted to find out academic background behind Deep Learning, then this would be too superficial for them. In some cases, it’s not even clear who and how someone would benefit from the presented material. (For instance, whom was the Linear Algebra chapter written for? It’s woefully impossible to understand if you don’t already know linear algebra. And if you already know it, it’s unnecessary. And if you sort of know it and wanted to brush up, what linear algebra they present in the chapter is not enough to go through the math in the book. So…)

If it’s for the people who want to get started with deep learning, it’s completely off topic, since it presents the mathematical nitty-gritty of the deep learning algorithms without mentioning any specifics of how to train a convo-net for example. The amount of information on convolutional networks and LSTMs is worse than on any number of blogs on deep learning or Wikipedia.

If you’re really interested in Math behind Deep Learning out of curiousity (perhaps you’re a mathematician who wants to know what this deep learning thing is all about) perhaps this is a book for you. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and watch/read Andrej Karpathy’s Stanford class.

Have I been reading book reviews backwards and you are supposed to count the white stars?

This book is not going to teach you machine learning and I don't even know why they bothered including the math sections because they just restate definitions, of varying relevance, that you may or may not know, in a confusing way.

It isn't going to teach you the math or even serve as a refresher on the math. The math review section is worthless. They don't have examples or practice problems. They expect you to do all the work, which you should, with another book.

This book, in every sense of the word, is rushed. I think the authors wanted to establish themselves as leaders of this young-ish field, but does so by sacrificing quality. It also shows that Deep Learning theory has been there for a long time, known by another name called Neural Networks. The interesting algorithms are of MLP, Back Propagation and the classical neural networks. The optimization methods such as Adam are the ones that are new and interesting, and the only ones worthy of in this book. So, essentially, what you get from this book is use A for X, B for Y and C for Z type of dry, un-intuitive, badly written waste of paper.

As for the structure of the book, it's like an example of how not to structure a book. It has some linear algebra, probability at the start (not good enough, and confuses more people and wastes paper). Goes on to prove other algorithms such as PCA (yeah, ok!). Then, talks about how this architecture works for this and that architecture.

So, yeah, if you really want to try out deep learning, don't buy this book. Set up Tensorflow/pytorch/ other library, run the tutorials, find an architecture for the problem you are interested in and start tweaking that. You will have far more fun and would have saved your money.

The praise that this book gets is beyond me. Did Musk even read this book? I doubt it.

Very clear exposition, does the math without getting lost in the details. Although many of the concepts of the introductory first 100 pages can be found elsewhere, they are presented with remarkable cut-to-the-chase clarity.

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-9992094705505665642019-04-18T11:34:00.000-07:002019-04-18T11:34:05.008-07:00PDF La perla rusa TrilogÃa Tu + Yo Completa Spanish Edition Phavy Prieto 9781796528374 Books

PDF La perla rusa TrilogÃa Tu + Yo Completa Spanish Edition Phavy Prieto 9781796528374 Books

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41tVi43ElqL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Download As PDF : La perla rusa TrilogÃa Tu + Yo Completa Spanish Edition Phavy Prieto 9781796528374 Books

¡Ya puedes disfrutar de toda la trilogÃa Tu + Yo al completo! Sardonic and certainly rude jokes, which makes it A+ in my opinion. It's a month in and I still get a daily texts with the quote of the day. There are curse words, so I wouldn't put it in your office if it is a more professional setting.

I will warn this - if the person opening the gift is so entertained that they decide to read through everyday immediately, encourage them not to do so. As expected, the binding on the calendar is not strong enough to handle flipping through all 365 days. The binding fell apart about midway through and broke into several sections. The calendar had to be repaired with duct tape and doesn't look quite as classy. Not everyone will do this, but I am still taking one star off.

The content of this calendar is very funny, exactly what I wanted for my desk.

Sadly it is falling apart. I felt that the over all plot just fell flat. Rush and Kira's problems were severe, but I felt that the way they faced them could have been executed better. Also, I usually like the friends-for-benefits thing, however, I felt that both characters insecurities and past blew too much out of proportion in the novel. It took away from the love story. And, the love story was good, but could have been better. I felt that the steamy scenes in this book was too repetitive. I just started skimming through them just to reach it to the end. I think that there was less showing of how the characters fell in love and more about their attraction for one another.

This is just more of a me than you thing. This book just wasn't my cuppa. But, for NA lovers of a steamy romance that has this trope and lovers of more angst, I highly recommend this book. Just because I didn't like this book as much, doesn't mean that you shouldn't check out more of this author's books. She writes excellent contemporary romance, just this one didn't really make me fall in love.

Emotion beyond compare, witty humor, and some real life tough choices make this book hit my top-five favorite 2019 reads. Wild Flame hit me straight in the feels. Rush and Kira are an extraordinary couple, and they have that once-in-a-lifetime kinda love I only hope i'll experience in my own life. A must-must-MUST read for anyone that loved the Willow Creek or Light in the Dark series. Or if you just want a story to rip your heart out and slowly mend it back together. Fan-freaking-tastic story from this author.

For the first 40% of this book, I questioned the length. Everything I was reading could have easily been condensed into half the length, and frankly I began to get frustrated. I LOVE this author, and even though she talked about and explained her reasoning behind the length of the book on her FB pages, I just wasn't seeing it. Then I hit the 55-60% mark, and I got it - I got why there was so much information and detail and backstory. Because without all of that, it would have been impossible to FEEL what Rush and Kira went through as they fought the demons that held them back from truly living. As a reader, it made me appreciate the struggles and triumphs all that much more. AS a fan - it made me realize that I knew better than to question anything Ms. Smeltzer does. This was not your typical romance book by any means - it was so much more than that. It was 2 damaged souls fighting for their chance at a rebirth and redemption. And it was beautifully told.

Wild Flame was such an intense and good read! From the way it started off, I knew I was in for the ride. Rush and Kira have been through a lot in their lives and made them who they are today. They are so much alike so of course they had an intense chemistry. Their relationship suited them so when the unexpected happened, it was fascinating to read how they would handle it. I felt for these two. Their past was sad and tragic. But I was all in for Rush and Kira. I loved the time they spent together-the banter, the interactions-it was great. Though this was a book about a couple, it was also about Rush and Kira as individuals. I loved that and it really made them endearing to me. I also loved the brotherhood between the Wild Flame guys-it was heartwarming and fun. By the end of Wild Flame, I was in love with Rush. This book had it all-humor, sexy, sweet, angst, and of course the Willow Creek guys. I’m really interested in Cannon and Fox and I’m excited for who’s next. Their stories will be great for sure. #BlushForRush

This was such an emotional book about two very broken people. Rush has not accepted nor come to terms with his parents death, while Kira had a tough childhood that has affected her outlook on love. Both make a pack to sleep together, but not be in a relationship or get to know each other. Of course, that plan soon explodes. I love how they get to know learn about each other and come to care about each other, to slowly seeing them fall in love, even though Rush and Kira strongly deny their growing relationship. Of course there are bumps in their happily after and I enjoyed reading their hardships as well as how they overcome the obstacles they face. I don’t want to reveal what happens to each character, but they are huge and life altering. I loved how the supporting characters and the relationship Rush has with his band members. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

4.5 stars

Rush Daniels, drummer for The Wild, and Kira Marsh, a college student working toward a nursing degree, are two damaged characters just getting through life. Both come from tragedies, intense and life changing. Although neither are looking for a relationship, or love, things don’t always work out like they plan. I loved these two characters, both together and apart. As damaged as they were, they needed the other to heal. I will admit this book is a little wordy, but otherwise it’s definitely a must read.

This book is unlike anything Micalea has written. It was absolutely amazing and jaw dropping. Rush and Kira are two tormented souls who collide and erupt.

This book....what can I say? Kira and Rush were unexpected. Together they were full of fire. The heat was intense. But their individual stories...we're talking a raging inferno of emotion and turmoil. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll be shocked. But you will love it. I certainly did.

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-88231541897860769112019-04-18T04:22:00.000-07:002019-04-18T04:22:10.865-07:00Ebook Andy Warhol Polaroids XL Richard B Woodward Reuel Golden 9783836551564 Books
Ebook Andy Warhol Polaroids XL Richard B Woodward Reuel Golden 9783836551564 Books

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41NLokWp3FL._SX411_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Product details

Hardcover 560 pages

Publisher TASCHEN (September 10, 2015)

Language English

ISBN-10 383655156X

Andy Warhol Polaroids XL Richard B Woodward Reuel Golden 9783836551564 Books Reviews

Heaviest book of the year! When this book arrived in the mail I knew it was a book but couldn't begin to guess what could be so heavy. What a surprise to see it was Andy Warhol Polaroids (Taschen). This massive volume comes in at a large 10x13 inches and 560 pages. Literally hundreds of polaroids taken by Andy Warhol are presented in full color. The polaroids are presented as objects so you see not only the image but the white border or the polaroid as well. There is a mixture of polaroids that are reproduced at actual size, and then some are at smaller size several to a page. The editors have done a good job of making sure the key portraits get full size treatment, and when they show a sequence of polaroids of the same person you will get one at full size with the others smaller. Reproduction quality is very good and the hardcover binding/presentation is sturdy and impressive in design. For Warhol fans this is the essential Polaroids book. Highly recomended!

This book is AMAZING. It's so large and beautiful. I never knew Andy Warhol made as many polaroids as he did. Everyone who's anyone was shot by Andy, he did a great job documenting a beautiful time in American art.

A+ all the way round! Taschen did a fine job with layout and print quality and what can you say about Warhol's Polaroids portraits other than fantastic! This is must have for any Warhol fan.

Magnificent , Huge fold out book, Photos are great, stunning piece to have on your entry table

So cool to see some of these old photos. Who else could have stuck a camera in the face of David Bowie at a nightclub in the 70's without him caring.

This book is SO heavy. It's huge. But very worth it. It's sitting on my coffee table - it's a great conversation piece and the photos in it are really cool. My favorite is a photo of Salvadore Dali and Alice Cooper -- how random! 5 stars )

This book is huge & heavy ! The pictures are great, brings you back to a great time in history. If you loved Andy, you need this book on your coffee table. Mine came in perfect condition & a at a great sale price ! No complaints here.

Had seen this book @ the Hirshorn Museum gift shop & hubby wanted it but it was $$$. Found it on as a gift for him & he loves it.

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-83260197057191520932019-04-18T03:10:00.000-07:002019-04-18T03:10:12.608-07:00Download Excellence Can We Be Equal and Excellent Too? John W Gardner 9780393301465 Books Reviews

History is usually taught as if it is primarily about something that happened in a quaint and very different time long ago. So it is hard to see what the big deal about history is. Almost nobody, even historians, looks at today and tries to imagine what today would look like to historians thirty years from now. Will they wonder why we were so blind to certain dangers? Marvel at how well we prepared for other risks?

This book was written many years ago, but is equally timely now. The author takes a fairly unsentimental look at American history from the point of view of what present danger we are neglecting to prepare for. His concerns mostly still make just as much sense as they did when the book was written. Some are bigger now, some a little more minor, but none have gone away completely. A few of the characters have changed, but the roles are the same. Many of the situations and concerns have recurred throughout US history, but the details are contemporary. The tone is optimistic but cautionary. The prescriptions for action are still mostly spot on.

The editing and proof reading are very bad, bad enough to make rereading necessary in many places. It appears that the text was scanned in either from a bad quality copy or with low Grace equipment and software, and either left with all the scanned mistakes or corrected by someone who did not understand what the book is about. If rereading sentences bothers you, try to get a different edition. The book is 5 stars, the edition is 2 stars. It is readable with a little imagination and a sense of humor, but it would be a fairly easy read if the proof reader had done a competent job.

The book and discussion itself is really great, quite ahead of its time. Encourages the reader to consider many sides of a complex issue, and I appreciated the mental flex of the vocabulary since I’ve been out of school for some time now (and therefore don't encounter much in the way of challenging reading).

However, there are almost 20 pages missing in this copy (paperback). Page 128 is followed by 145. Disappointing to say the least.

Mark F. LaMoure, Boise, ID

"Excellence," by John W. Gardner is a grade "A" book. Mr. Gardner discusses the many strengths and failings of our educational system, our confusion over the idea of equality and the nature of leadership in a free society. This is a book about high standards. We must strive to be the best we can possibly be, as individuals and together as a society. A great book for academics and everyone.

This is a book about America's love for two competing values competition and equality. As Americans, we enjoy seeing excellence rewarded. But also, we Americans enjoy equality and abhor inequality of result. In education, for instance, there is a constant struggle between 'standards based education' (treating all equally), and 'tracking' (adjusting students instruction to their competence level). In economic matters, we dislike seeing economic inequality but enjoy the industry and efficiency that 'meritocracy' creates.

How do we navigate these waters? That is what former US Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare John Gadner writes about.

The first chapters of this book are devoted to pointing out that these competing values of excellence and equality are both part of the American consciousness. The next few chapters, particularly one consisting of a brief overview of the Civil Rights Movement, details how holding these conflicting beliefs can lead to confusion between equality of opportunity and equality of result. (The Civil Rights movement, for instance, at once seeks equality of opportunity but is often forced to measure it via equality of result.)

The next several chapters outline how this dilemma of competing values affect the world of education, where we are often hesitant to rank students by ability but do not want to treat all children the same either. The disadvantages of ranking by ability are numerous (a) what do we mean by 'ability' and who defines it? (b) do we run the risk of consigning kids to 'their fate' too soon and missing vital opportunities for growth? (c) do we run the risk of judging on things other than actual ability (family background, ethnic origin, etc)? But there are also disadvantages to treating students the same (a) some students may be hurt by being in programs beyond their ability level; (b) other students of higher level may not reach their potential; (c) we run the risk of ignoring the great plurality of talents and abilities and force all students into one mold (generally "college prep" which results often in the "dumbing down" of college curricula).

These issues and more are gone through in this clearly written and concise (a little over 100 pages) book. Gardner's conclusion is that we strive, when possible, for a middle-road that tries to offer true equality of opportunity and incentive for merit while, at the same time, limiting the amount and effect of disparities of reward. Gardner writes poignantly against extreme visions of equality (forcing us into a sameness that ignores the benefits of diversity) and extreme forms of meritocracy (which would punish the disadvantaged for being disadvantaged). Gardner wants to see a middle approach that strives for a minimum of equality that is still compatible with human plurality and competition.

Maybe due to its brevity, I found that this book didn't often approach matters deeply but, in some ways, glossed through them. How much equality is compatible with diversity? How can we structure schools that (as Gardner wants) offer differentiated education suitable to each child's abilities while avoiding the potential to consign students to 'fates' prematurely? (He mentions an intriguing ' principle of multiple chances" for students but doesn't explicate what this means in practice.) In other words, Gardner writes convincingly that these values of excellence and equality are, in some sense, conflicting but doesn't really do too much by way of reconciling them, but to advocate a poorly-defined "middle way."

I give the book four stars though because of Gardner's clear writing, thoughtful examination (even without resolution), and the fact that this book is every bit as relevant today as it was in 1961.

This is a great little book, that despite being quite old (early 60s, I think) is probably more germaine now than it was then.

Superb insights on education. Debunks the left wing myth of equity and excellence.

Read this book years ago from the library at work - content has remained some of my favorite information. I've attended workshops with Dr. Honigsfeld and she's one of the best in the field.

Currently, teachers are expected to work collaboratively and many are actually placed in a co-teaching situation. Unfortunately, these vital skills aren't taught and teachers are left to wing it, often to disappointing results. Collaboration and Co-teaching lays out the models that teachers can utilize. The language is straighforward and intelligent. The edition for only an additional $2.99 is a nice bonus. I can't wait to put it all in practice. Excellent.

This is a worthwhile resource tool. It provides a useful springboard into discussions of practical approaches and the learning theories and curriculum.

This is a really good book for any first year teacher.

In Massachusetts, many ELD teachers use English only to help their ELLs acquire English. Sometimes this means that ELD teachers can work closely in the classroom with the mainstream teacher to make content comprehensible to their students. This book provides a roadmap toward making the classroom/ELD partnership work. I recommend it to teachers who are or want to be open to every available method to help their ELLs to achieve success.

Perfect book for what I needed ,informative

I should have known to be skeptical. Three out of the four previous reviews were written by people who have only ever reviewed 2 items (this book, and another) from . A teacher that really reads for development is bound to have many more reviews under his or her belt.

Ok, on to the book. Over a span of about 5 pages, several co-teaching arrangements are presented. None of them are presented in depth, and the advice amounts to the same, anyway Make time to plan with your co-teacher as much as possible, and include language objectives and modifications as appropriate. There, I've just saved you the entire book.

Here's what would have been helpful
A transcription of classroom lessons in each of these configurations, along with detail as to who prepared what.
That way, you could see a lesson unfold, and at what time teacher A was talking vs. teacher B, and how long they did what, etc., and what questions the students had, etc. Obviously, you can't diagram a 45 min-lesson verbatim, but several snapshots could have been presented. The book does have a few jointly-designed lesson plans at the end, but that doesn't show what it looks like in practice or how that lesson came to be. In addition, the language objectives that were presented on the few lesson plans in the book seemed like they should have been regular content objectives more so than special skills for ELLs.

Also, transcripts of ESL teachers and their co-teachers planning could have been presented to further clarify the collaborative process.

The rest of the book looks like it was written for administrators. It may convince an administrator or two to implement common planning time or periodic meetings. It may remind them that the ESL teacher is not a glorified aide.

Overall, as I said, this book included very little and was very expensive.

Book is great and service was just as expected 😊THANKS !

As an ESL teacher who primarily has a push in program, this has been an excellent resource for documents to orchestra planning with 2 professionals.

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-14369192695737585952019-04-18T00:46:00.000-07:002019-04-18T00:46:06.672-07:00Download PDF Como Tocar Saxofon Spanish Edition Not Available 9788441414938 Books

Download PDF Como Tocar Saxofon Spanish Edition Not Available 9788441414938 Books

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51iYA4khjyL._SX398_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Download As PDF : Como Tocar Saxofon Spanish Edition Not Available 9788441414938 Books

Rare book

Download PDF Como Tocar Saxofon Spanish Edition Not Available 9788441414938 Books

"el libro por su caracter y manejabilidad lo hace el mas facil de comprender ya que lo hace de una manera simplificada y no tecnica. recomiendo este libro para todo principiante e intemedio que desee perfeccionar en este arte, hasta el momento este es uno de los libros que necesariamente no requiere conocimiento avanzado sino en lo mas minimo no por eso deja ser uno de los mejores."

Product details

Paperback

Publisher Edaf Antillas (January 1, 2006)

Language Spanish

ISBN-10 8441414939

Tags : Como Tocar Saxofon (Spanish Edition) [Not Available] on . Despite Bowen theory being based on research begun more than seventy years ago, the value of viewing human beings as profoundly emotionally-driven creatures and human families functioning as emotional units is more relevant than ever. This book, written by one of his closet collaborators, updates his still-radical theory with the latest approaches to understanding emotional development.

Reduced to its most fundamental level, Bowen theory explains how people begin a relationship very close emotionally but become more distant over time. The ideas also help explain why good people do bad things, and bad people do good things, and how family life strengthens some members while weakening others. Gaining knowledge about previously unseen specifics of family interactions reveals a hidden life of families. The hidden life explains how the best of intentions can fail to produce the desired result, thus providing a blueprint for change.

Part I of the book explains the core ideas in the theory. Part II describes the process of differentiation of self, which is the most important application of Bowen theory. People sometimes think of theories as "ivory tower" productions interesting, but not necessarily practical. Differentiation of self is anything but; it has a well-tested real-world application. Part II includes four long case presentations of families in the public eye. They help illustrate how Bowen theory can help explain how families―three of which appear fairly normal and one which does not―unwittingly produce an offspring that chronically manifests some time of severely aberrant behavior.

Finally, the book proposes a new "unidisease" concept―the idea that a wide range of diseases have a number of physiological processes in common. In an Epilogue, Kerr applies Bowen theory to his family to illustrate how changes in a family relationship system over time can better explain the clinical course of a chronic illness than the diagnosis itself.

With close to four thousand hours of therapy conducted with about thirty-five hundred families over decades, Michael Kerr is an expert guide to the ins and outs of this most influential way of approaching clinical work with families.

Download PDF Bowen Theory Secrets Revealing the Hidden Life of Families Michael E Kerr MD Books

"For five years, 1954 to 1959, at the National Institute of Mental Health, psychiatrist Murray Bowen conducted a most unusual research project, focused on schizophrenia. Adult patients and their parents were hospitalized together for observation and treatment. The intensity of the emotional process in these families—the sensitivities, reactivity, and the profound influence of family members on one another’s functioning--came into view. Like a powerful undercurrent, this emotional system was guiding family interaction but was largely out of the awareness of the members. It is aptly called “the hidden life of families.â€

In the 1960s, Bowen had developed the core concepts of his theory and was teaching at Georgetown University School of Medicine. In a department of psychiatry focused primarily on individual intrapsychic dynamics and rooted in psychoanalytic theory, Bowen represented a radically different view: the family, not the individual, was the emotional unit in which psychiatric illness would best be understood. In a department where family relationships were considered the cause of emotional problems, “so it is the last place you want to go to try to work out these problems†(p. 175), Bowen was coaching residents to engage their families directly as the best place to observe their own emotional functioning and develop greater maturity.

Into this department came Michael Kerr as a young resident. In his first encounters with Dr. Bowen, Kerr was struck with how the ideas made sense. For many who discover this theory, the first thing that captures interest is how well the theory describes one’s own family experience. Kerr began clinical supervision with Bowen in May 1969. Six months later, Kerr’s older brother who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, committed suicide. Bowen became a crucial resource for Kerr in dealing with this tragic event and in his effort over years to see it in the context of his own multigenerational family system.

The relationship between Drs. Bowen and Kerr evolved from a mentorship to a close and fruitful collaboration. Kerr pursued his own study of science, with special focus on biology, evolution, neuroscience, and medicine. His knowledge of theory deepened as he made presentations and wrote numerous articles and book chapters. In 1988, his first book, Family Evaluation, was published. It is an overview of Bowen theory placed in the context of the natural systems in which the human family is embedded. It quickly became a key resource for clinicians and other learners. Kerr’s part of Family Evaluation is followed by Dr. Bowen’s Epilogue, his last major writing in which he reflects on the theory and his “odyssey toward science.†In October 1990, two years after the publication of Family Evaluation, Bowen died. Kerr succeeded him as Director of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family.

Now, thirty years later, Kerr offers this remarkable book, revealing the “secrets†of Bowen theory in a way that only he could do. My first impression was that the book is all encompassing, meaning that it contains the full depth and breadth of what Kerr knows from years of immersion in systems thinking, science, clinical practice, and life experience. Here are a few highlights:
• A review of the theory’s core concepts, enriched by many references from the natural sciences, many examples of the parallels between emotional process in humans and emotional process in other species;
• A comprehensive, nuanced, detailed presentation of the process of differentiation with all of its complexities and its pitfalls;
• Kerr’s investigation into “families in the public eye,†four case studies of people who manifested extreme emotional and behavioral disturbance: three who committed heinous murders and one who was a genius mathematician while suffering with schizophrenia from which he eventually recovered. Using the available public records to construct the family data, Kerr traces the family emotional process in each case. One comes away with a far more comprehensive and complex understanding of seemingly inexplicable behavior than is possible with a narrower focus on individual characteristics and pathology.
• Unidisease: a proposed new concept in Bowen theory. Kerr’s interviews with cancer patients and their families, plus his extensive study of the biology of cancer and several other diseases, led him to see the number of physiological processes they have in common. The unidisease concept describes the continuity between chronic anxiety generated in the family and the chronic-anxiety driven stress response involved in most illnesses. Kerr cites many findings in medical research that are consistent with the unidisease hypothesis, but notes that “the toughest issue remains, which is proving the link between chronic anxiety in a family system and psychological and physiological processes of individual family members.†(p. 321)

Bowen theory is not an “ivory tower†set of abstractions, but a living theory with a level of usefulness that can be life-changing. Kerr demonstrates that usefulness with clinical vignettes to illustrate particular points in the theory, with a composite in-depth clinical case study, and most importantly with the study of the family he knows best—his own. He refers to his own family at many points and ends the book with an epilogue, “Applying Bowen Theory to My Own Family.†The reader might be curious about Kerr’s decision to do this, but it proves to be a most effective way of teaching the theory and the way theory guides the effort toward differentiation, maturity, and responsibility. As one follows his thinking, one sees how objectivity and blame-free neutrality emerge as one gains a broader understanding of chronic anxiety as it plays out across generations through repeating patterns, impacting the emotional functioning of each member to different degrees. As he learned more, Kerr saw more clearly the total family involvement, including his own part, in the emotional process that led to his brother’s impairment and suicide. With this perspective, one can only respect the power of the family emotional system.

This hidden emotional system, with its comforts and its constraints, is what we live in every day, instinctively knowing its presence and feeling its pressures, but lacking the perspective to bring it into focus and awareness. Murray Bowen’s elegant theory poses a challenge to those who would discover its secrets. It requires one to develop the discipline of systems thinking in a world that operates largely on cause-and-effect thinking, and to acquire the knowledge needed to see human nature in the context of evolution. For those who are up for the challenge, Michael Kerr’s masterful presentation of Bowen theory offers serious, essential, and most trustworthy guidance."

Product details

Hardcover 446 pages

Publisher W. For Barthes, words and objects have in common the organized capacity to say something; at the same time, since they are signs, words and objects have the bad faith always to appear natural to their consumer, as if what they say is eternal, true, necessary, instead of arbitrary, made, contingent. Mythologies finds Barthes revealing the fashioned systems of ideas that make it possible, for example, for 'Einstein's brain' to stand for, be the myth of, 'a genius so lacking in magic that one speaks about his thought as a functional labor analogous to the mechanical making of sausages.' Each of the little essays in this book wrenches a definition out of a common but constructed object, making the object speak its hidden, but ever-so-present, reservoir of manufactured sense."--Edward W. Said

Read Online Mythologies Roland Barthes Annette Lavers Books

"This is a very thoughtful and philosophical book that explores the ways we construct modern myths in today's society. I referenced this book for my Master's thesis and honestly, it made me fall in love with Barthes and his approach to visual semiotics. My French wasn't so good, and my progress was slow, but the book nonetheless struck me as funny and wonderfully off-kilter. The prose style was playful, but also clear. It didn't hurt that the historical era Barthes was talking about wasn't so far removed from my own awareness (I was born during the period when the articles were written). His way of looking at everything precisely, but from an unorthodox perspective and with a sense of ironic humor, had a deep influence on my own writing when I started writing a magazine column a few decades later. More recently, it's also influenced my teaching.

I came to this translation thinking of assigning some essays as reading for college students in a business program. It didn't take long to ditch that idea this translation would make it too tough for most of them to share my enthusiasm. The historical distance of the subject matter wasn't the problem -- some annotations and illustrations could help with that. In fact, one of the benefits of this edition is a small insert of illustrations to help the 21st Century reader visualize what Barthes was writing about. Many essays also have a short introductory footnote on their first page, providing historical context. The real problem is with the tone of the translation -- it makes Barthes sound insufferably pretentious and fussy. If you've ever been to a university party where some middle-aged professor is getting carried away with the sound of his own voice, it's a bit like that. If I'd begun with this version instead of the original, I'm sure I'd have gotten impatient with it about a third of the way through.

Given how shaky my French was when I read the book the first time, I wondered whether maybe this translation captured the essence of Barthes, to which I'd been insensitive earlier. I've read a lot more French since then, including some dull and pretentious stuff. But when I checked now, Barthes still isn't that. Despite occasional flourishes (but precise ones), his vocabulary is mostly pretty clear -- which is how I managed to make it all the way through so many years ago. His sentences are long and full of clauses, but they have a rhythm lacking here.

One particular issue I noticed from a random comparison is that the translators often distort the syntax that gave structure and poise to the French original. Here is an example from one of the more political essays, "The Cruise of the 'Batory'," contrasting the magazine Le Figaro's coverage of a 1955 French cruise taking tourists to visit the USSR with that of the refusal of some French soldiers to fight in Algeria. According to the magazine, the cruise had given the Russians a glimpse of a sort of cheerful anarchy and individualism among the disorderly French. Barthes's original essay ends as follows

Here is the translation in this edition

“When four hundred Air Force veterans, called up for North African service, refused to serve one Sunday, _Le Figaro_ no longer spoke of the sympathetic anarchy and enviable individualism of the French no longer any question here of museum or metro, but rather of colonial investments and big money; whereupon ‘disorder’ was no longer the phenomenon of a glorious Gallic virtue but the artificial product of a few ‘agents’; it was no longer glamorous but _lamentable_ and the _monumental lack of discipline_ of the French, formerly praised with so many waggish and self-satisfied winks, has become, on the road to Algeria, a shameful treason. _Le Figaro_ knows its bourgeoisie freedom out front, on display, but Order back home, a constitutive necessity.†(@148)

A few observations about this translation

(a) In the first sentence of the passage Barthes strings together three sentences into one - but each clause is a complete sentence. One translation strategy might have been to punctuate the passage differently as two or three distinct sentences. Instead H&L retain the one-sentence structure but make the flow choppier by subdividing into into four chained clauses, including two sentence fragments (“no longer any question here …†and “whereupon…â€). In doing so, they also make it hard for the reader to see the causal relationship between the topics of those two fragments. Compare a translation of Barthes’s middle clause roughly as follows “as it was no longer a matter of museum or metro, but of big colonial bucks, ‘disorder’ suddenly wasn’t the result of a glorious Gallic virtue but the manufactured product of a few ‘agents’â€.

(b) H&L insert formal and lengthy words where they weren’t present in the original e.g., “whereupon†rather than “suddenly†for ‘tout a l’heure,’ “a constitutive necessity†for the adjective ‘constitutif,’ “phenomenon†rather than “result†for ‘fait,’ and “colonial investments and big money†for the intentionally coarse ‘gros sous coloniaux’ (as in “big colonial bucks,†“colonial big money†or something similar).

(c) In the last sentence, H&L erase Barthes’s balanced contrast of freedom and order as reflected in the parallel syntax of the concluding clauses. They also downplay his irony by omitting the adverb “bien†(‘well’), and ignoring the bourgeois resonances of “vitrine,†connoting a shop window. Something closer to the sense of Barthes’s last sentence might be “_Le Figaro_ knows its bourgeoisie well freedom on display in the shop window, as decoration, but Order at home, as foundation.â€

All in all, the translators’ choices make Barthes seem much more pompous and distant from the reader than he really was; and in passages like the one just quoted, they also downplay his political engagement.

Many reviewers here on managed to enjoy this book despite the problems I've described. If you don't read French, don't let my review discourage you from picking up this book. But if you get frustrated with it, please remember that in the original it's a much more elegant, humorous and brilliant read than comes across from this version.

This is a very thoughtful and philosophical book that explores the ways we construct modern myths in today's society. I referenced this book for my Master's thesis and honestly, it made me fall in love with Barthes and his approach to visual semiotics. He demonstrates the way socially constructed ideas can be normalized in the media, elevating them into unquestioned, everyday assumptions we make about the world.

While Barthes wrote this book in the 1950s, the messages apply even more today. With Barthes' help, we can challenge culture and the mythologies it tends to create.

The 1990’s American teen in me was more than slightly confused a few essays into Roland Barthes’, Mythologies. I was even more so confused after googling “Elle France,†and finding out my connection was indeed accurate, and that the ‘Elle’ that Barthes continuously refers back to, is indeed the French counterpart to the American Elle magazine. The image of Barthes sitting in study reading a woman’s’ fashion and lifestyle magazine full of articles on “how to dress for your body type,†or “101 ways to please your man,†popped into my head a few times. Chuckles aside, I admit that I had to remind myself that it was 1957 more than a few times. Oddly enough, though Barthes undoubtedly had no idea what the connotation of Elle would become, its current meaning and presence in Mythologies is one that adds to some of the myths.

Mythologies as a whole is based on society. There are stories, facts, and metaphors that cross generations, burying themselves as validation as myths. Barthes draws a great deal of his reactions from Elle, and those reactions live in a patriarchal universe. This is not so much a critique of Barthes and his view on society, as it is an observation on society and reality. Thematically men are at the top of society, children strive to grow into men, and women are allowed freedoms, but at the end of the day, their position is to bear children and care for the home. Reminder It’s 1957.
The first essay I read from Mythologies was “Novels and Children.†A feminist would have a field day with this essay (you’ve read it, so you know why). Personally, I wanted to pat the women mentioned in Elle on the back and congratulate them for writing their books while caring for their children, husbands and home. I’m there right now terrible twos, a colicky newborn, endless laundry, cooking, dishes… and writing and school. Here’s the thing- 1957 or 2016, it doesn’t matter, the struggle for women to balance work and home is still essentially the same. I say essentially because society has changed to where it is not dictated, but for those who believe in the system, we live in the myth. Our husbands provide and we in turn bear children and take care of the home, often becoming superwomen for achieving careers and success as well. There is more equality today, but the bare system is still present. This system moves down to the children as well.

In “Toys,†Barthes repeatedly defines his explanation as specifically relating solely to French toys. As I read “Toys†though, I can’t help but look around my living room and connect the dots. My living room has a little tykes grill, kitchen set, trucks, trucks, more trucks, and the plastic version of every tool you can possibly imagine… and blocks. Again, a theme that crosses time. Sixty years and a continent later, home life has not changed that much. We are undoubtedly, as Barthes connects, “creating the future...†“We present our children with miniature objects of adulthood and they take from it, what they will become... and admittedly, I’m rethinking some of my choices in toys now.

While some of Barthes myths are relatable across times and nations, not all are. Barthes know this and points it out in “Striptease†and “Wine and Milk.†Some nations have common thought and systems within themselves. The French are different than Americans in not only some of their customs, but also their behavior. Mythologies explores the social power (or restraint or common behavior) that is present in French society. What is powerful is that things that would breakdown an individual in another society has no effect or power over the Frenchmen. A naked woman does not cause men or women in France to blush (so much as the act of stripping down would), just as wine does not cause them to become drunk (in so much as they do not purposefully overdrink). There is restraint in society, the French have control over their actions and the portrayal of themselves. In both myths it is the act of doing something that is meaningful and not the conclusion of that act.

The veil in society is broken down in “Ornamental Cookery.†This essay also brings us full circle back to Elle, which still has me seeing Barthes red cheeked (though this essay makes it easier to remember its 1957), “Ornamental Cookery†was a validation of sorts for me. Barthes addresses Elle as a bit lackluster in terms of credible sources, but nevertheless, there is no doubt that the magazine in all of its 1957 glory is a reflection on society. However, the reflection on society is more connotation that denotation. “Ornamental Cookery†in its plainest version is descriptive of food recipes popular in the 1950’s. These recipes often called for dishes to be smothered in sauces, decorated, and glazed in a manner so that one cannot really tell from the surface what is underneath. “Ornamental Cookery†is a metaphorical essay that brings us back once more to the overall discussion on society, where individuals can cover themselves to appear appealing. This phenomenon is yet another idea that crosses time. The idea that people are never truly what they appear to be, and can hide their true identity. Mythologicaly, it reads almost as a warning, as much as it might appear to be advice.

I think we are meant to see ourselves in Mythologies. Perhaps not each and every essay is conclusive with a readers life, but I could not help but find similarities with most of the essays that I read. While society will change with time, with location, with governing, the basic structure will remain. That is the mythology of the society.

such a fun book to read. its a little weird at first but as I started to look into the different reasons why he wrote about certain topics it really made me think and have some interesting convos with people.

This is the full edition - often you come across editions that leave out the wonderful and scathing depcition of a Billy Graham crusade in Paris

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-19082551972783623172019-04-17T19:58:00.000-07:002019-04-17T19:58:01.044-07:00Read Online Guía de los descarriados Spanish Edition Maimónides Philip Bates Books

Read Online Guía de los descarriados Spanish Edition Maimónides Philip Bates Books

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41WBCq3lnzL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

"One of the best philosophy books i have ever read. To understand what happens to the people in these interconnected stories is to understand America's anguish. Based on thousands of primary documents and 180 on-the-record interviews, the book describes the battles that evoked cultural and political conflicts that still reverberate.

Read Online They Marched Into Sunlight War and Peace Vietnam and America October 1967 David Maraniss 9780743261043 Books

"David Maraniss' THEY MARCHED INTO SUNLIGHT ties together three separate but related episodes in the third week of October 1967. The central protagonists are the 2/28 Black Lions, a top notch Vietnam unit walking into a slaughter at the battle of Lai Khe. Matching the Vietnam story is the lead-up to the Dow riot at the University of Wisconsin, where liberal educators found themselves confronted with students were blinded by hatred over the war to the point hat their actions lacked reasonableness. The third and minor story line is that of LBJ and his cabinet, hopelessly befuddled about what to do.

Each section has its heroes and goats. The grunts that make up the Black Lions are America's finest, while the brass commanding them are all to often power-hungry, career forwarding egotists. Maraniss particularly lays bare the deceit and vanity of General Hay. The Wisconsin students that riot reflect an arrogance that even they are embarassed about years later while the administration are pictured as classic liberals, respectful, tolerant, and wishing to allow dissent. The students, however, want change and they want it now. In hindsight, one of the big differences between 1967 and 2010 is that you could riot and disrupt the activies of a university that was sympathetic to you and still have the hope of employment in 1967. In a 2010 context, you just simply would have dismissed the students. Still more discouraging is LBJ's advisors who have inadequate information about Vietnam, seem more concerned about PR and the upcoming election, and seem to know that it is unwinnable.

An excellent book. I found the whole book to be a really intriguing presentation - alternating between the battlefield and college campus (peace movement) during October 1967. The details made it all come alive. I was just a kid when all this happened, and it's interesting to see behind all the generalities and headlines that I heard and only vaguely remember.

The particular battle that the author highlights - I can't even imagine what those guys experienced. But I really think Mr. Maraniss brings that point of view home. The differences in beliefs, experiences and points of view between protesting students, college administrators, soldiers, their families, generals and politicians (local and national) is well covered in this book. It's hard to reconcile, at least for me because their realities are all so different. At the end of the book, the author accompanies some soldiers (US and North Vietnamese) and family members back to that battlefield in current day Vietnam. What a phenomenal end to a fascinating and tragic story.

The book was extremely well-written and held my interest throughout. It was all good, but I did find the first and last quarter of the book to be the most engrossing. This will be a book that I re-read.

I read David Maraniss' book 'They Marched Into Sunlight' after watching the PBS documentary "Two Days in October" - the PBS documentary is based on Maraniss' work and features a good number of on-camera interviews with the actual participant years later. Being a former soldier, I was deeply interested in how and why the 2/28 Infantry "Black Lions" was nearly annihilated by the NVA at the battle of Ong Thanh on October 17, 1967. The entire event of the destruction of the 2/28 was covered up by the U.S. Army and the mainstream press for years and it wasn't until some three decades later that the truth eventually emerged with Maraniss' book published in 2003 and a military history account, 'The Beast Was Out There', written by the former battalion operations officer, Jim Shelton, in 2002.

David Maraniss is a great writer - one of the best. He writes with a fluid, seamless narrative style that places him at the top of his profession. In 'They Marched into Sunlight' Maraniss is describing two parallel events - the emerging anti-war college movement which resulted in the take-over of the University of Wisconsin on October 16-17, 1967 and the destruction of a U.S. Army infantry battalion of the famed First Infantry Division on the same date. Two incidents seemingly unrelated by event or location, but related by the fact that both involved America's sinking morass into the Vietnam conflict. I believe Maraniss's book 'They Marched Into Sunlight' will be read for many years as one of the best Vietnam-era historical works, and not just the battle itself, although his description of the battle of Ong Thanh itself in chapters 15 and 16 will keep you on the edge of your seat, but also the corrosive effect of the war on the civilian population with the increasing draft calls and the unexplained - and probably explainable - resultant deaths of young servicemen, both drafted or enlisted, into a ground war in southeast Asia with no apparent end or objective. For those who were of college age or subject to the draft in the mid to late 1960's, this work will have a special significance.

I found 'They Marched Into Sunlight' one of the best-written works of recent American history that has come from the mainstream press. Maraniss does not take "sides" on the Vietnam conflict - maybe that time has passed. He writes skillfully, cogently, and with proper respect to the participants both in the war zone and back at the university.

[For more background on the 2/28 Infantry and the battle of Ong Thanh, get a copy of Jim Shelton's well-written first-hand account 'The Beast Was Out There' as a companion work to 'They Marched Into Sunlight.']

David Maraniss' THEY MARCHED INTO SUNLIGHT ties together three separate but related episodes in the third week of October 1967. Peter Kuper's wordless graphic novel about New York City in the mid-1990s, replete with corruption, greed, and the struggle of ordinary, downtrodden human beings to survive each grinding day, remains frighteningly up-to-date some 15+ years after publication. His art is rough-hewn at first glance, but reveals exquisite & telling details the more you look at it. To my mind, it's always seemed to fall somewhere between the deceptively whimsical art of Keith Haring & the emotionally severe woodcuts of the German Expressionists of the 1920s. Certainly he shares their social & spiritual concerns for a humanity all but crushed by a ruthless corporate world based on money & control. Yet the spark of individuality & the hunger for personal freedom of thought & soul remains alive, even beneath the injustice, the brutality & the grime of an overwhelming cityscape. This one definitely needs to be back in print -- recommended reading for anyone who aspires to something more than the emptiness of digital distractions, lying politicians & CEOs, and wealth-driven ideologies.

Peter Kuper is in my opinion one of the best comic artistcreating today. The System is a wordless story about a live in a big, ugly, sleazy city. In The System Kuper creates a complicated story of many lives and how they interact whith each other, all told in pictures with hardly any words, and the pictures are fabulous, Kuper has a very individual style which I think is brilliant. This is not a comic book for kids it touches on themes of racism, violence, love, sex, organiced crime, corupt cop's, injustice and of course the endless search for freedom from all this.
Many people seem to think that comics are just for kids and not a serious art form which can say anything to adults, this is just one of many comic books available today that totaly demolishes that bogus wiew, if you have not read a comic since you were a kid, give this a try I dont think you will be disapointed.

This is one of the most amazing books I've ever looked at. It is a fully immersive experience that is surprisingly easy to follow, considering it has no words. I highly recommend this to become one of your coffee table books!

Luckily I own two copies of this, my favorite graphic novel. One I look at now and then, and one I have in the digital painting studio at the Visualization Department at Texas A&M. My students need to learn what is here strong graphic chops, narrative, and metaphoric visual transitions (a screaming mouth becomes a subway entry, etc.). The technique is original, and the color dramatic. This slim volume has the heft of a best-selling political mystery, with strong, recurring characters and an intertwining plot. So...why is it no longer in print????!!!

The system is an absolutely amazing graphic novel/piece of art. I usually prefer words in my books, but this one totally didnt need them. Each shape in the book was individually stenciled and spray painted, which gives it a homemade but gritty feel. The colors range from grubby to vibrant, and each page is breath taking.

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-4062396183775158292019-04-17T12:46:00.000-07:002019-04-17T12:46:12.734-07:00Ebook Understanding the Universe James B Seaborn 9781461268680 Books

Ebook Understanding the Universe James B Seaborn 9781461268680 Books

https://ws.assoc-amazon.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=1461268680&Format=_SL300_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ID=AsinImage&WS=1&ServiceVersion=20070822

Download As PDF : Understanding the Universe James B Seaborn 9781461268680 Books

Intended for undergraduate non-science majors, satisfying a general education requirement or seeking an elective in natural science, this is a physics text, but with the emphasis on topics and applications in astronomy. The perspective is thus different from most undergraduate astronomy courses rather than discussing what is known about the heavens, this text develops the principles of physics so as to illuminate what we see in the heavens. The fundamental principles governing the behaviour of matter and energy are thus used to study the solar system, the structure and evolution of stars, and the early universe. The first part of the book develops Newtonian mechanics towards an understanding of celestial mechanics, while chapters on electromagnetism and elementary quantum theory lay the foundation of the modern theory of the structure of matter and the role of radiation in the constitution of stars. Kinetic theory and nuclear physics provide the basis for a discussion of stellar structure and evolution, and an examination of red shifts and other observational data provide a basis for discussions of cosmology and cosmogony.

Ebook Understanding the Universe James B Seaborn 9781461268680 Books

"Science, mathematics, and engineering majors typically have little time for the more advanced, and more interesting humanities courses. Each short chapter covers a subject (optics, for example) and states what you really need to know. The problems at the end fortify that which was just taught. Answers are given to most problems but the method to find them is up to you. An excellent self-teaching book for the amateur astronomer who would like to know some of the science involved or for the serious student who needs to reclaim some lost physics. The book focuses on problems peculiar to astrophysics. Small enough to stick in your shoulder-bag and keep with you. One of my must-keep books.

I am currently teaching an undergraduate-level course titled "Introduction to Astrophysics and Cosmology" at Stevens Institute of Technology, and I am using this book as the text. The course is intended as a science elective for non-physics majors, so my class consists mostly of computer science majors who have had one semester of physics and two semesters of calculus in their freshman year.

The book provides a good summary of the classical mechanics typically taught in "Physics I" and goes on to cover electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, relativity, and atomic physics, all in the context of explaining astrophysical phenomena. As the title implies, this is an elementary physics text first and foremost, with an emphasis on astrophysics. From a practical perspective, it is relatively small, lightweight, and inexpensive (from the lack of color illustrations, I assume), all of which influenced my decision to adopt it for my course.

Here is a list of some other texts that I considered for adoption and have been using as supplemental references

Carroll, An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics (Addison-Wesley Longman)
Chaisson, Astronomy Today (Pearson Prentice Hall)
Snow, Universe Origins and Evolution (Wadsworth)
Zeilik, Introductory Astronomy and Astrophysics (Brooks/Cole)

This is a great book. It not only introduces you to some essential and facanating astrophysoics, but it also has a lot about classical mechanics which helps you understand the more advanced parts of the book. All in all it is good for someone who is willing to think about the problems in the book (some make you have to think for youself about the way to solve the problems.) But a scarce amount of calc. and trig (E.I. logarithms/ limits) is necessairy (both of which are on one or two pages each. All in all, a great start for an undergraduate necessairily majoring or someone who is just interested in how the universe works.

Excellent book

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3496760861352895976.post-37646761187513414242019-04-17T11:34:00.000-07:002019-04-17T11:34:09.791-07:00Ebook The Devil Swing Don Henry Ford Jr 9781589393455 Books

Ebook The Devil Swing Don Henry Ford Jr 9781589393455 Books

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51QBw2WbT-L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Download As PDF : The Devil Swing Don Henry Ford Jr 9781589393455 Books

Set in the beautiful, but poverty stricken region of Southwest Texas known as The Big Bend and the corresponding Chihuahuan desert of Northern Mexico, the story depicts the lives of three local marijuanos, whose endless obsession to get high catapults them into the dangerous world of drug smuggling. It keeps your interest from start to finish. It was one of those "I hope this book keeps going & going"...or you hope that this author keeps putting out adventure stories like this. You can kinda' tell he's not a polished writer...yet. However, polished is not what I'm after in adventure stories, true or fiction. I want the nitty-gritty, real life story telling that this author specializes in writing.

I spent five years flying legal contraband into Mexico, no drugs of course, just TV's, VCR's, Levis etc. Due to Mexico's high import tariff rates, a legal business developed in south Texas for this sort of work. From this experience, Mr. Ford's books bring a very special interest for me.

Difficult to believe this is fiction. Thomas Nicasio has obviously been traumatized, and Sophie thinks she knows why. There’s something about his past that he can’t—or won’t—remember. Something that could get them killed. Most women would run from a man like Thomas. Not Sophie—even when she knows she’s playing with dynamite.

She can’t resist his electrifying seduction. She doesn’t want to control her willing submission to him. And she knows she never should have taken it this far. Because now it’s too late. Thomas’s past is closing in on them. And as danger and desire collide, Sophie knows that his next touch could consume her—if it doesn’t kill her first.

Read Online Explosive Beth Kery 9780425236710 Books

"STORY BRIEF:
Sophie is a doctor (internal medicine). Tom is an investment advisor who has an office in the same building as Sophie. Tom previously was an explosives expert for the NAVY. Sophie and Tom have seen each other frequently, being in the same building. They have been attracted to each other but never acted on it.

Sophie takes a few weeks off to spend time at her parents' lake cottage in central Illinois. To her surprise Tom shows up at her door. He has a bruise on his head. He desperately needs to have sex with her - she is willing. He leaves the next morning. She follows him back to Chicago to try to figure out what is going on. She realizes he has amnesia and doesn't remember going to her lake cottage. An FBI agent sees Sophie with Tom and tells her that Tom is in danger. Sophie asks Tom to come to her lake cottage for a few days. She wants to help him with his amnesia, plus she is falling for him.

There have been some murders of people close to Tom, and he may be next. His amnesia isn't helping. But during this time, he has an insatiable need for sex with Sophie. And there is lots of it. It's explicit and includes rear door activity, sex toys, light bondage, and mild spanking.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
Tom desperately hungers for Sophie in all ways, and she's happy to comply. The sex scenes were hot. I actually found myself with goose bumps a couple of times which surprised me. I wasn't sure whether it was the book or the room temperature (probably the book). Don't expect any relationship development which would have been nice.

An undercurrent is Tom's amnesia, causing him to be distant. Tom hears Sophie talking on the phone about him. She's getting advice from her psychologist friend. She doesn't tell this to Tom and she doesn't tell him about his amnesia because it may hurt rather than help his coming out of it. Therefore Tom is suspicious which creates some conflict/tension between the couple, which was ok.

The suspense part of the story relates to murder and Tom's adopted father being investigated for organized crime activities. This is a minor part of the story and happens mostly at the end of the book. It was not typical romantic suspense which has bad guys interacting with good guys throughout the book. But the suspense part was good. The ending was very nice. My favorite Beth Kery books are Daring Time and Release, but this is worthwhile if you like her style.

The title of the book touches several things including Tom's past work in the NAVY and a warehouse explosion. But I see it mostly relating to explosive sex, explosive relationships in Tom's past, and Tom's current temperament.

DATA:
Story length: 326 pages. 'Explosive' is a great name for this book as I hung onto the pages that were full of explosive seduction and mystery. Plus, Thomas Nicasio was a former Navy bomb (explosive) specialist (think sexy expert with focus and precision). Thomas ended up injured and dazed on Doctor Sophie Gable's dock at Haven Lake where Sophie was on a getaway. From this moment in the book, I was whisked away into their world that I can not bring myself to spoil here in any way! I will say I loved being all caught up in them and wondering while reading what happened to bring him there and would they get a happily after ever or only just a secluded rendevous?

I trust Beth Kery. I have read several of her books. She doesn't give it all away from the start and the things you need to know that she doles out along the way are just the way I like a story told. Her stories are also very, wonderfully erotic. Her descriptions in the beginning of the book set the stage of anticipation for a huge attraction for the characters. It's not like Thomas and Sophie were strangers, but they were only acquaintances with a huge "across the room" attraction to one other. This book is more than just attraction. It is scenery, time in a bubble away from impending mayhem and a sexual awakening for Sophie. So the perfect storm that brought them together intimately is ultimately about to get worse.

My heart (along with Sophie's) poured out for Tom as the book moved on. In some ways this was pure wonderful non-verbal communication and in other ways, I found it dearly romantic as their backstories made them perfect together. The epilogue was a huge, light treat after their tumultuous beginning and suspenseful ending. Another hit for me!

I don't think Beth will mind some quotes

"He looked so different than his polished city-self, but Sophie thought he had never looked more real, more savagely intense than he appeared here at Haven Lake. He may be a whirlwind of grief, but she'd never known a more vibrant man in her life."

"Okay I'm ready to play doctor" (Thomas stole my heart in laughter there)

"My whole life, " he said quietly, "I never had anything that was just mine." Her eyes burned. For some reason, she knew exactly what that meant

STORY BRIEF
Sophie is a doctor (internal medicine). Tom and Sophie are amazing together and I found the amnesia aspect of this story to be refreshing and interesting. Of course this story is HOT but in addition the characters are well written and I cared what happened to them. Of course the HEA is always the end goal but the road leading to it kept me reading for hours and I could not put this book down.

I have yet to read a Beth Kery book that I didn't really enjoy and this one is no different! In typical BK fashion this book has incredibly hot sex and sexual tension but also and an excellently suspenseful plot!! This book really keeps you turning pages to see what happens next, the character development was really excellent and for me at least it took me a little while to decide what to make of Thomas - In the end I loved both the H/h! To sum up, another hit for Beth Kery, fans jump on this one and for those of you who have never read her, what are you waiting for??

Disappointed in this book. I was confused where and what was happening. Took me longer to read than other books written by the same author. Ending (last two - three chapters) were the best but then the book ended.

I loved this story, it's not a conventional one. The sexual encounters descriptions absolutely wonderful and the suspense and intriguing plot that come with it, makes the difference Ms. Kerry gives to her stories. I found myself looking for clues to solve the cause of the amnesia Thomas was experiencing and definitely loved the loving way Sophie took care of him. Lovely reading, I recommend it, you'll enjoy it.

Don Lynnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01916536400039637754noreply@blogger.com0
